Taliban Rejects U.S. Proposal to Reclaim Bagram Air Base
The Taliban has dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to regain control of Bagram Air Base, emphasizing Afghanistan's sovereignty and adherence to the Doha Agreement.
The Taliban government has rejected U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to reclaim Bagram Air Base, a facility under Taliban control since the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. Trump suggested that the Taliban might be open to allowing U.S. military presence due to their ongoing economic challenges and internal issues.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid responded by urging the U.S. to adopt a policy of "realism and rationality." He emphasized Afghanistan's commitment to an economy-oriented foreign policy and constructive relations based on mutual interests. Mujahid highlighted that Afghanistan's independence and territorial integrity are paramount and referenced the Doha Agreement, in which the U.S. pledged not to use or threaten force against Afghanistan's sovereignty. He called on the U.S. to remain faithful to its commitments.
The Taliban's firm stance underscores their position on foreign military presence and their interpretation of international agreements.
