Hamilton clinches pole position at Mexico City Grand Prix

Summary

Lewis Hamilton secured pole for the Mexico City Grand Prix, with George Russell second and Charles Leclerc third after a competitive qualifying session.

Lewis Hamilton claimed pole position for the Mexico City Grand Prix, marking his first pole with Ferrari and his first since 2023. Hamilton said, "That feels good. Hola Mexico! I'm lost for words. It's been a really tough, challenging weekend, obviously P1 we had the rake running and then the engine issue yesterday, I didn't get to do a long run. But we've done a really good job with the set-up, we've worked and learned a lot from the last race."

George Russell finished second, noting the difficulty of the weekend and the need to improve his car's performance. He commented, "It's been a tricky few races for me, and still struggling to get on top of this car to be honest, because it's been a difficult weekend up until one lap in Q3. Finding half a second to almost get pole, congrats to Lewis, I always know it's in there."

Charles Leclerc took third place, acknowledging challenges with tyre windows and car handling. He said, "I just didn't do a good job, the outlaps were very difficult to put the tyres in the right window, this is where we struggle the most. In Q3, run two I had a clean outlap but the car felt different to before and I just didn't do the job when I needed to."

Max Verstappen qualified fourth, dropping a place, while rookie Antonelli moved up to the second row. During the session, driver Hadjar received a reprimand for an improper pit-lane entry and was classified sixth.

The qualifying session highlighted close competition among the front runners, with Hamilton edging Russell by 0.009 seconds to secure the top spot on the grid for Sunday’s race.
