Norris edges Antonelli by 0.001s in final practice for Mexico Grand Prix

Summary

Lando Norris set the fastest lap in the third practice session at Mexico, beating Kimi Antonelli by a thousandth of a second ahead of qualifying.

Lando Norris posted the quickest time in the final practice session for the Mexico Grand Prix, edging out Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli by 0.001 seconds. The 1:17.600 lap was set on soft tyres, with Norris topping a field that saw all four leading teams competitive on the high-altitude Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Antonelli briefly led the session with a 1:17.601 lap before Norris reclaimed the top spot. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was third, 0.117 seconds slower, while McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri and Red Bull's Max Verstappen completed the top five.

Lewis Hamilton, who missed part of FP2 due to engine trouble, recorded a 1:18.162 lap in the first half of practice, placing him sixth. Mercedes driver George Russell expressed difficulty with grip at Turn 12, and Red Bull's Hadjar described his car as “the worst car I've driven this weekend, it's terrible.”

Midfield teams faced challenges: Haas driver Ryo Hirakawa, substituting for Esteban Ocon, finished 19th, and Cadillac's Sergio Perez did not set a time after a precautionary engine change. Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto also failed to record a lap following a power-unit issue.

The session set the stage for a close qualifying, with the top four teams—McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull—separated by less than half a second.
