Lakers owner Mark Walter and Josh Kushner finalize terms of $12.5 billion sale

Summary

Mark Walter and venture capitalist Josh Kushner have reached agreement on the remaining conditions of the NBA-record $12.5 billion sale of the Los Angeles Lakers, pending NBA approval.

Los Angeles Lakers owner Mark Walter and Josh Kushner of Thrive Capital have reached an agreement on the remaining conditions of the team's sale, valued at $12.5 billion, according to sources familiar with the matter. The deal, which still requires signatures and a review by the NBA, will be presented to the league's Board of Governors for final approval.

Kushner, a venture capitalist and the younger brother of Jared Kushner, met with Walter at Walter's Florida residence to finalize the terms. Kushner has told Walter that he has the necessary funds to complete the transaction, and former Disney chief executive Bob Iger is reported to be partnering with Kushner on the deal.

Walter acquired a majority stake in the Lakers in 2025 from the Buss family for an estimated $10 billion and announced his intention to sell the franchise less than a year later. He is also dealing with a federal loan investigation involving his holding company, TWG Global, which is seeking additional capital to address loan obligations. Recent reports indicate that Walter and Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly have sold a minority interest in English Premier League club Chelsea and that Walter is exploring a sale of the WNBA's Sparks.
