Estonia Seeks NATO Consultations After Russian Airspace Violation
Estonia has requested NATO consultations following a 12-minute incursion by three Russian fighter jets into its airspace near Vaindloo Island.
Estonia has requested consultations under NATO's Article 4 after three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated its airspace near Vaindloo Island on Friday morning. The aircraft entered without permission, remaining for nearly 12 minutes before being escorted out by NATO fighters.
Prime Minister Kristen Michal described the violation as "totally unacceptable" and emphasized the need for a united and strong NATO response. Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna labeled the incursion as an "unprecedentedly brutal" violation.
In response, NATO's North Atlantic Council is set to convene early next week to discuss the incident. The Russian Defense Ministry denied any airspace violation, stating that the flight was conducted in strict accordance with international rules.
This incident follows recent Russian drone incursions into Polish airspace, raising concerns among NATO members about regional security.
