The Bharatiya Janata Party held on to its overwhelming hold over the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council with 79 seats, while the Samajwadi Party added two more seats to reach 12 and kept the Leader of the Opposition post, underscoring the limited but real opening for opposition forces.
Uttar Pradesh chief electoral officer Navdeep Rinwa announced the results of the recent Legislative Council elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) kept 79 members in the council, and its allies – the Rashtriya Lok Dal, Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, Nishad Party and Apna Dal (S) – each secured one seat, bringing the National Democratic Alliance’s combined strength to 84, a striking display of the ruling bloc’s continued institutional dominance.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) raised its representation from 10 to 12 members, winning five seats and thereby retaining the post of Leader of the Opposition, which requires a minimum of ten members. The party’s gains included the Lucknow Graduate seat, previously held by the BJP, and the Agra Teacher seat, formerly held by an independent candidate, giving the opposition a modest but meaningful boost.
Independent members fell from four to three after the election. Although the BJP lost the Lucknow Graduate seat, it maintained six seats overall, including a win in the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teacher constituency where Dhruv Kumar Tripathi, now running on a BJP ticket, defeated independent candidate Rajeev Yadav by 307 votes.
The Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party secured no seats, while the Jansatta Dal Loktantrik retained a single member. BJP candidates performed strongly in western Uttar Pradesh, retaining seats in Meerut and winning in Bareilly-Moradabad, Agra Graduate, Lucknow Teacher and other constituencies. SP candidates performed well in eastern Uttar Pradesh and the Bundelkhand region, holding the Varanasi Teacher seat, winning the Agra Teacher seat, and retaining the Allahabad-Jhansi Graduate seat, among others.
