Red Wings suspend Dylan Larkin without pay amid trade dispute

Summary

The Detroit Red Wings have suspended captain Dylan Larkin without pay after he refused to play, while the team continues to explore trade options.

The Detroit Red Wings announced that forward Dylan Larkin will not be in the lineup for Thursday night’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks at Little Caesars Arena. Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said the club has suspended Larkin without pay, noting his decision not to play and the impact on the team’s obligations.

"Dylan Larkin has informed us that he will no longer play for the Detroit Red Wings. We are disappointed by his decision, particularly given his obligations to the organization and his teammates. We have therefore suspended Dylan without pay," Horcoff said.

Larkin’s agent Pat Brisson released a statement indicating that Larkin is frustrated with the pace of trade discussions and hopes his absence will prompt the club to move him.

"Dylan's had enough of the situation. We believe he's been very professional and cooperative through this process," Brisson said.

The suspension will cost Larkin $41,237.11 for each day he remains out of the lineup. The club said it will continue to seek trade partners, emphasizing that any deal must meet the Red Wings’ long-term goals and receive Larkin’s approval.

Larkin, 30, is under an eight-year contract with an average annual value of $8.7 million and has a no-trade clause that limits potential destinations to ten listed teams. The Red Wings have previously stripped him of the captaincy and he has missed several games this season due to injury and the ongoing dispute.

The organization is also negotiating the status of defenseman Simon Edvinsson, whose contract situation remains unresolved.

The Red Wings did not comment on specific trade targets, but indicated a preference for acquiring a center and additional assets such as prospects or draft picks.
