Summary

King Charles continued his Caribbean tour in Guyana, where the visit is focused on environmental cooperation and stronger UK-Guyana trade ties.

King Charles landed in Guyana on Thursday for the second part of his Caribbean state visit, after concluding a two-day trip to the Bahamas. The itinerary puts emphasis on environmental and sustainability issues, as well as the growing commercial links between the United Kingdom and Guyana.

The monarch is scheduled to meet President Irfaan Ali and attend a state reception marking 60 years of bilateral relations. Cultural elements will feature, including a performance by a Scottish bagpipe ensemble.

Guyana, formerly British Guiana, has experienced rapid economic growth since oil was discovered in 2015, while maintaining extensive rainforest cover and low deforestation rates.

During his Bahamas visit, the King acknowledged the United Kingdom’s historic involvement in the slave trade and expressed a desire to address past injustices. His spokesperson said the visit aimed to celebrate the modern partnership between the two nations and discuss shared future challenges.

A small group of protesters in the Bahamas carried signs calling for reparations, but their presence did not interrupt the scheduled events.

After Guyana, the King will travel to Antigua and Bermuda, where he will open a Commonwealth leaders summit as head of the organization.
