Trump and Xi Plan Meetings Amid Progress on TikTok Deal
U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have scheduled meetings in South Korea and China, following discussions on a TikTok agreement and other key issues.
U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed to meet at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea at the end of October, marking their first in-person meeting since 2019. Trump also announced plans to visit China early next year, with Xi expected to visit the United States at a later date.
In a recent phone call, the leaders discussed progress on a deal concerning the U.S. operations of TikTok, the popular video-sharing app owned by China's ByteDance. The proposed agreement involves transferring TikTok's U.S. assets to American investors to address national security concerns. While Trump indicated that China appears to have approved the deal, Chinese state media described the call as "positive" but did not confirm the agreement.
The two presidents also addressed other significant issues, including trade relations, the opioid crisis involving fentanyl, and efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine. This dialogue comes amid ongoing trade tensions between the two nations, with both sides imposing tariffs and negotiating over technology exports and agricultural purchases.
The upcoming APEC summit in South Korea is scheduled to begin on October 31, providing a platform for further discussions between the U.S. and Chinese leaders.
