Summary

The BJP’s disappointing results in Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections have prompted a hard review of candidate selection, while the Samajwadi Party’s gains remain confined and have not altered the wider balance in western Uttar Pradesh.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced unexpected defeats in several Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council constituencies, pushing party leaders to take a hard look at candidate selection and the internal dissent that appears to have hurt performance. Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya said the party would review its showing and analyse how the Samajwadi Party (SP) managed to win seats the BJP had not expected to lose.

In the Agra Teachers' constituency, SP candidate Akash Agarwal, who had initially sought a BJP ticket, won after the party nominated Hari Kishore Tiwari, a move that reportedly alienated some local supporters. The Varanasi Graduates' constituency saw the BJP field Kedar Nath Singh, who had lost the 2020 election to SP leader Ashutosh Sinha, raising questions about the party’s reading of local conditions and candidate fit.

The SP also secured the Varanasi Teachers' seat with Lal Bihari Yadav, an experienced figure in teachers' politics, defeating BJP nominee Pramod Mishra. In Lucknow Graduates' constituency, the BJP's choice of Avneesh Singh Patel faced opposition from within the party, but the leadership did not alter the nomination, suggesting a gap between local workers and central decisions that should not be ignored.

The party’s selection of Ashok Rathore in the Jhansi-Allahabad constituency has similarly been questioned after a setback. While the BJP retained dominance in the Meerut-Saharanpur Graduates' and Teachers' constituencies and in the Bareilly-Moradabad area, the SP’s victories elsewhere have not shifted the overall balance in western Uttar Pradesh, a region crucial to its 2027 electoral strategy.

Analysts note that the distinct electorates of teachers' and graduates' seats mean that candidate profiles, professional networks and organisational reach are decisive factors, offering both parties valuable lessons ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
