House Passes Resolution Honoring Charlie Kirk and Condemning Political Violence
The House approved a resolution honoring conservative activist Charlie Kirk and condemning political violence, with a divided Democratic response.
The House of Representatives approved a resolution on Friday honoring the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk and condemning political violence. The vote was 310-58, with over 90 Democrats joining all Republicans in favor, while 58 Democrats opposed and 38 voted present.
Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was assassinated on September 10, 2025, during a speaking event at Utah Valley University. The alleged shooter has been charged with multiple counts, including aggravated murder.
The resolution commends Kirk's commitment to civil discourse and his efforts to engage young Americans across the political spectrum. However, some Democrats expressed reservations due to Kirk's past controversial statements. Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) cited his remarks about prominent Black women, stating, "As a Black woman, the verbal assault on so many Black women coming out of his mouth stunned me."
Despite differing opinions, Democratic leaders allowed members to vote their conscience. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) indicated he and his leadership team would support the resolution but emphasized individual choice.
The resolution also calls upon all political leaders to "stand united in unequivocal condemnation of political violence, regardless of their ideology" and urges Americans to reject political violence and recommit to respectful debate.
Kirk's funeral is scheduled for Sunday in Arizona, with the president and other major Republican leaders expected to attend.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) highlighted Kirk's approach to debate, stating, "He was the first person after that to reach out a hand of friendship or offer an arm around the shoulder of someone who he had just defeated in a contest."
The passage of this resolution marks a significant moment as Congress addresses the broader issue of political violence in the nation.
