A 24-year-old man wanted on stalking charges fatally shot three officers and wounded two others in North Codorus Township before being killed by police.
In North Codorus Township, Pennsylvania, a 24-year-old man wanted on stalking charges fatally shot three law enforcement officers and wounded two others before being killed by police. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when officers attempted to serve arrest warrants at a residence linked to the suspect, identified as Matthew James Ruth.
The officers, including four detectives from the Northern York County Regional Police Department and a deputy sheriff from the York County Sheriff's Department, were met with gunfire upon entering the home. Detective Sergeant Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker, and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser were killed in the ambush. Two other officers sustained critical injuries and are currently in stable condition at WellSpan York Hospital.
Authorities had been seeking Ruth in connection with allegations of stalking his ex-girlfriend, who had reported him for prowling and trespassing. The day before the shooting, she observed Ruth in camouflage near her residence and reported the sighting to police. Trail camera footage later confirmed his presence in the area.
York County District Attorney Tim Barker described the attack as a "calculated ambush." He emphasized the dangers posed by domestic violence situations, stating, "That is what brought us here, that is what brought law enforcement here, that is what started all the activity."
The community has been deeply affected by the loss. Residents gathered to pay respects, holding flags and lining the roads as a procession of emergency vehicles transported the fallen officers. Flowers were placed outside the Northern York County Regional Police Department in tribute.
Governor Josh Shapiro addressed the tragedy, stating, "We need to do better as a society. We need to help the people who think that picking up a gun, picking up a weapon is the answer to resolving disputes."
