Three police officers were killed and two others injured in an ambush while serving a warrant in York County, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday afternoon. The suspect was fatally shot during the confrontation.
The incident occurred as officers attempted to arrest 24-year-old Matthew James Ruth at his ex-girlfriend's residence. Upon entering the home, officers were met with gunfire from Ruth, who was armed with an AR-style rifle equipped with a suppressor. Detective Sgt. Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker, and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser of the Northern York County Regional Police Department were killed. Two other officers were wounded; one remains unidentified. Ruth was killed in the ensuing exchange of gunfire.
The ex-girlfriend and her mother had previously reported suspicious activity, including a man in camouflage observing the house with binoculars and a trail camera image showing someone aiming a rifle at the home. Ruth had also been suspected in an earlier incident involving the ex-girlfriend's car being set on fire.
Governor Josh Shapiro addressed the tragedy, stating,
"We need to do better as a society. We need to help the people who think that picking up a gun, picking up a weapon is the answer to resolving disputes."
The International Association of Chiefs of Police expressed condolences, emphasizing the dangers officers face daily and the need for continued efforts to prevent such tragedies.
The Pennsylvania State Police and the York County District Attorney’s Office are conducting a joint investigation into the incident. Authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to safety.
