Summary

The Bharatiya Janata Party secured five of the 11 Legislative Council seats in Uttar Pradesh, while the Samajwadi Party won three, as counting continued across graduate and teachers' constituencies.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won five of the 11 seats contested in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, with the Samajwadi Party (SP) taking three, officials said on Wednesday as counting progressed in the remaining constituencies.

In the Allahabad-Jhansi Graduates’ constituency, SP candidate Mansingh Yadav was declared elected, while the BJP’s Manvendra Pratap Singh (Guruji) won the Agra Graduates’ seat. The BJP retained the Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers’ seat, where candidate Hari Singh Dhillon defeated SP nominee Danish Akhtar by 17,676 votes, receiving 21,672 votes to Akhtar’s 3,996.

BJP candidate Umesh Dwivedi won the Lucknow Teachers’ constituency, beating SP’s Sushil Kumar by 6,992 votes (13,179 to 8,371). In Meerut, BJP candidates Dinesh Kumar Goyal and Shri Chand Sharma were declared winners in the Graduates’ and Teachers’ constituencies respectively.

In the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers’ constituency, BJP’s Dhruv Kumar Tripathi led Independent candidate Rajiv Yadav by 466 votes after the final round of counting (11,881 to 11,415), with SP’s Sanjayan Tripathi third at 8,301 votes. Disputes were raised over a ballot-box discrepancy of 52 votes in a Mau booth, prompting the removal of Additional Commissioner of Ayodhya Ajay Saini after a candidate’s complaint. The administration said the counting adhered to established rules.

The Varanasi Teachers’ seat was won by SP’s Lal Bihari Yadav, and SP candidate Akash Agrawal defeated BJP nominee Hari Kishore Tiwari in the Agra-Aligarh Teachers’ constituency, receiving his election certificate on Wednesday. SP president Akhilesh Yadav alleged that Agrawal faced mistreatment during the process and called for an inquiry by the Election Commission, the Supreme Court and the President.

Voting for the 11 seats, comprising five graduate and six teachers’ constituencies, took place on Friday, October 23, 2026. The results are viewed as a prestige contest between the ruling BJP and the opposition SP ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
