Two high-speed trains collide in Spain, line suspended

Summary

A Renfe train and an Iryo train collided near Toledo on the Madrid-Seville high-speed route, prompting suspension of the line while authorities assess damage and possible injuries.

Two high-speed trains operated by Renfe and Iryo collided on Wednesday morning in the province of Toledo, between the towns of Mora, Orgaz and Urda, according to railway infrastructure manager ADIF. The trains were travelling on the Madrid-Seville line, leading officials to suspend service on the route linking the capital with Andalusia.

Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, said emergency services were on the scene to assist those affected. > "We are shocked by the serious train incident in Toledo and emergency services are on the ground to help," he posted on X.

Mayor Manuel Galán of Urda told Cadena Ser that authorities are preparing a facility to receive any injured persons following a request from the Civil Protection agency. Los Yébenes mayor Jesús Pérez Martín said he had received limited information and described the event as a serious accident.

The extent of damage and the number of injuries have not yet been confirmed.
