Apple introduces M6-powered iMac and 14-inch MacBook Pro with higher starting prices

Summary

Apple's upcoming iMac and base-level 14-inch MacBook Pro will feature the new M6 chip, faster connectivity and increased performance, but will launch at higher price points in Australia.

Apple is set to refresh its iMac and entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 processor, the same chip that debuted in the M6 Mac Mini earlier this year. The updated iMac retains its 24-inch 4.5K Retina display, aluminium enclosure and stand, but gains faster Bluetooth 6, Wi-Fi 7 and improved solid-state drive performance. Apple says the M6 chip delivers roughly two to three times the performance of the M1-based iMac released in 2021, targeting AI-related workloads, apps and games.

In Australia, the refreshed iMac will start at AU$2,399, up from AU$1,999 for the 2024 model with comparable memory and storage. The base-level 14-inch MacBook Pro, which adds USB-C, Thunderbolt, HDMI and an SD-card slot, will also ship with the M6 chip, featuring a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine. It will support Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and fast charging that reaches 50 % capacity in 30 minutes with a high-wattage charger. The new MacBook Pro is priced from AU$3,199, compared with AU$2,499 for the previous M5 version.

Both devices are expected to become available in Australian stores in early November, with the iMac and MacBook Pro slated for release around November 6.
