Florida mother arrested on child neglect charges after leaving four children unsupervised during work trip
Osceola County deputies arrested 50-year-old Irene Miller at Orlando International Airport after investigators said she left her four children home alone while she worked in Las Vegas.
Osceola County, Fla. – Deputies from the Osceola County Sheriff's Office arrested Irene Miller, 50, of Kissimmee, on four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm after she allegedly left her four children unsupervised while traveling for work in Las Vegas.
The investigation began after a 911 call on Oct. 21 reported that a 9-year-old boy had been injured when a dumbbell fell on his head. Responding officers found the home empty of adults and four children, ages 14, 12, 11 and 9, unattended. The injured child was taken to Celebration Hospital and later released.
Miller told deputies she had departed for Las Vegas on Oct. 18 and was scheduled to return on Oct. 23. She said a babysitter traveling from Tampa was to prepare the children for school each morning and check on them during the day, but was not required to stay overnight.
After the incident, the children's father was contacted and agreed to take the children into his care. Detectives arranged to meet Miller as she arrived on a flight from Las Vegas at Orlando International Airport on Friday. She was taken into custody as she exited the aircraft and booked at the Orange County jail.
