Apple launches new iMac with M6 chip, touting AI and performance upgrades

Summary

Apple introduced an iMac powered by the M6 processor, claiming up to double the graphics performance and significantly faster on-device AI compared with earlier models.

Apple announced a new iMac equipped with its latest M6 processor, extending the chip’s availability beyond the Mac mini and Mac Studio. The M6-based iMac features up to a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engines, which Apple says deliver roughly twice the graphics performance of the prior M4 iMac and up to 50 % faster productivity in applications such as Microsoft Excel.

"The iMac with M6 offers up to five times faster on-device AI performance for prompt processing in LM Studio compared to the M4 model, and twelve times the speed of the M1 model," the company stated.

The machine ships with a 4.5K 24-inch Retina display, 500 nits brightness and P3 wide-color gamut, unchanged from the previous generation. Connectivity upgrades include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, 2.5 Gb Ethernet and Thunderbolt 4 ports, while supporting up to two external 6K displays. Configurations start at $1,499 for a model with a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU and 16 GB of unified memory, with a higher-spec version priced at $1,699.

Apple also highlighted the integration of its next-generation Siri AI, branded as Apple Intelligence, which is embedded in macOS 27 and enables users to query emails, photos and other content via voice or text. The feature is not yet available in Europe.
