Murray works to adapt to Vikings' progression-based offense amid modest production

Summary

Kyler Murray said the Vikings will improve as he continues to adjust to their offense, while his performance this season has been modest and the team relies on its defense.

Quarterback Kyler Murray said the Minnesota Vikings will keep improving as he becomes more comfortable with the team’s progression-based passing system. Murray, who completed 58 percent of his passes for 150 yards and a touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts, noted, "We’ll continue to get better. I know we will. I know we keep saying that, but I felt like we moved the ball well (against the Colts). We’ve just got to put the ball in the end zone."

The Vikings rank near the bottom of the league in pass-rate over expected and have relied on a conservative offensive approach while their defense continues to perform strongly. Analyst Alec Lewis highlighted that the 2026 Vikings are the first team in a century to win five straight games with five or fewer touchdowns in each contest. Through Week 7, Murray ranks 28th of 40 qualifying quarterbacks in EPA per pass attempt and 33rd in fantasy points per drop-back.

In the most recent game, Murray threw one touchdown on a five-yard pass to tight end T.J. Hockenson and added 39 rushing yards, including a 35-yard scramble. He was sacked four times and threw an interception that was ruled out of bounds. Murray’s deep-ball attempts remain limited, and he has been described as a game-manager who relies on his rushing ability to help the team win when the defense dominates.

Murray is expected to return from concussion protocol for the upcoming matchup against the Detroit Lions, where he is projected as a mid-range fantasy quarterback (QB2). The Vikings will continue to depend on their defense while the offense seeks greater consistency under Murray’s leadership.
