ABC Suspends 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' Indefinitely Following Host's Remarks on Charlie Kirk's Death

Summary

ABC has indefinitely suspended 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' after the host's comments regarding the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk sparked controversy.

ABC has indefinitely suspended 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' following remarks made by host Jimmy Kimmel concerning the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. During his Monday night monologue, Kimmel criticized the 'MAGA gang' for attempting to 'score political points' from Kirk's killing. He also mocked President Donald Trump's response to the incident, stating, 'This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he calls a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish.'

The suspension was announced after Nexstar Media Group, which operates numerous ABC-affiliated stations, decided to preempt the show indefinitely. Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar's broadcasting division, described Kimmel's comments as 'offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse.'

President Trump welcomed the network's decision, posting on social media: 'Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done.' He also criticized other late-night hosts, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, referring to them as 'two total losers.'

The Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA condemned the suspension, viewing it as a violation of free speech rights. The Writers Guild stated, 'Shame on those in government who forget this founding truth.'

Kimmel has not publicly commented on the suspension. The future of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' remains uncertain, with Kimmel's contract set to expire in May 2026.
