Harry Kane Wins First English Ballon d'Or in 25 Years

Summary

Harry Kane became the first Englishman since 2001 to win the Ballon d'Or after a record-breaking season with Bayern Munich and England, while Spain's Alexia Putellas secured her third women's award.

Harry Kane was named the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner on Monday, becoming the first English player to claim the award since Michael Owen in 2001. The 33-year-old striker scored 73 goals for club and country last season, leading Bayern Munich to a Bundesliga and German Cup double and helping England finish third at the World Cup, where he became the nation’s all-time leading World Cup scorer.

"Anything is possible with hard work, when no one else is watching, to go through the ups and downs, to learn through resilience, determination and self-belief," Kane said in a message to young players.

Kane finished ahead of Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, 2024 winner Rodri and eight-time winner Lionel Messi in the voting. England coach Thomas Tuchel praised Kane, saying the team is "lucky to have you as our leader."

Fans gathered outside the London Palladium, where the ceremony was held, climbing light poles and chanting his name as he arrived and left the venue.

Kane indicated he would keep celebrations modest, noting an upcoming cup match and an early flight back to Munich for training.

In the women's category, Spain’s Alexia Putellas won her third Ballon d'Or, matching the record for most women's awards. Putellas, who moved to London City Lionesses after a season with Barcelona that included a Women’s Champions League title, encouraged young players to pursue the sport with love and passion.

"Believe in yourself, that's the most important thing. If you have a dream, go for it, even if at some point you have to start from zero," Putellas said.

The ceremony marked the first time it was held in London, commemorating the inaugural winner Stanley Matthews in 1956.
