Giants surge to NFC East lead as rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy finds early success

Summary

New York Giants have risen to first place in the NFC East, propelled by J.J. McCarthy's strong performances after being acquired from Minnesota.

The New York Giants entered their bye week atop the NFC East with a 4-2-1 record, driven by a surprising turnaround at quarterback. After being traded for a fifth-round pick less than a month ago, rookie J.J. McCarthy threw for 243 yards in under a quarter against the Saints and followed with a career-best 252 yards versus the Texans, the same venue where he led Michigan to a national title in 2024.

McCarthy, 23, said, "> It’s one of those things where you think you’re starting over, but no, you’re starting from experience," reflecting his adjustment to the Giants' system. He added, "> Just being able to really start feeling like the defense is slowing down and understanding concepts, intent of plays, understanding the situation," after a Week 14 win over Washington in which he completed 16 of 23 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns.

Wide receiver Malik Nabers, returning from an ACL injury, has become a key target, recording 11 catches for 206 yards in less than five quarters with McCarthy. Head coach Brian Harbaugh expressed confidence in the young quarterback, noting, "> It’s understanding if things aren’t working out for you, that’s not the final say. You have the final say on everything, ultimately."

The upcoming bye week is expected to give McCarthy additional time to develop chemistry with his teammates before the Giants resume play on Nov. 8 in Philadelphia.
