Harry Kane wins 2026 men's Ballon d’Or, first English winner in 25 years

Summary

England striker Harry Kane was named the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or winner, ending a 25-year gap for English players, while Alexia Putellas claimed the women’s award for a third time.

England’s Harry Kane was announced as the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or recipient at a ceremony in London’s Palladium Theatre, becoming the first English player to claim the award since 2001. The women’s Ballon d’Or was presented moments earlier to Alexia Putellas of the London City Lionesses, marking her third win.

Kane secured the prize ahead of Lamine Yamal of Barcelona and Kylian Mbappé of Real Madrid, according to the vote of journalists and football administrators that determines the award. His season included winning the European Golden Boot, contributing to Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga title, and captaining England to a World Cup semi-final.

“It was really tough this year, the incredible players I was up against,” Kane said as he accepted the trophy. “I am almost speechless. Being here in London has made it extra special.”

Kane’s tally of 89 goals for club and country since August 2025 was highlighted as a key factor in his selection. Bayern Munich, which signed him for €100 million three years ago, noted his overall play, creativity and professionalism as important to the team’s success.

The win places Kane among a select group of players who have received the Ballon d’Or, an accolade historically dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
