Israeli Tanks Poised for Gaza City Incursion Amid EU Sanctions Proposal
Israeli forces prepare for a ground operation in Gaza City as the European Union proposes sanctions in response to the escalating conflict.
Israeli tanks have positioned themselves on the outskirts of Gaza City, signaling a forthcoming ground operation into the enclave's largest urban area. This military buildup has prompted tens of thousands of Palestinians to evacuate the city, which had an estimated population of about one million before the announcement of the incursion.
Despite the Israeli military's announcement that the ground operation had commenced, eyewitnesses and satellite imagery indicate that tanks have yet to enter the city. The United Nations and other international bodies have expressed concern that the assault could exacerbate the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where parts of the region have been officially declared under famine conditions.
In the past 24 hours, 98 individuals were reported killed across Gaza, bringing the total death toll since the conflict began to over 65,000, according to the Palestinian health ministry. The ministry has previously stated that approximately 70% of casualties in Gaza have been women and children.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have announced a temporary route along Salah al-Din Street to facilitate civilian evacuation from Gaza City, open for 48 hours until Friday midday local time.
International condemnation of Israel's actions continues to grow. The European Commission has proposed suspending free-trade arrangements with Israel and imposing sanctions on key Israeli political figures, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, as well as 10 Hamas leaders. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized that these measures aim to pressure the Israeli government to end the conflict and alleviate humanitarian suffering in Gaza.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar criticized the EU's move as "morally and politically distorted," asserting that such actions would harm Europe's own interests.
The situation remains fluid as Israeli forces prepare for a potential ground incursion into Gaza City, and international diplomatic efforts continue to address the escalating conflict.
