Thunder forward Jalen Williams faces surgery after fractured fibula and ankle dislocation
Oklahoma City Thunder forward Jalen Williams will undergo surgery for a fractured fibula and dislocated ankle, sidelining him for an undetermined period, while teammate Cason Wallace also requires shoulder surgery.
Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti announced that forward Jalen Williams suffered a fractured fibula and a dislocated left ankle during the team's Sunday win over the Los Angeles Clippers. The injury occurred with less than two minutes left in the game when Williams collided with guard Kris Dunn while attempting a rim drive, prompting medical staff to stretcher him off the court. Presti said Williams will need surgery and that a precise return timeline will be established after the operation.
Williams, who appeared in 33 regular-season games this season because of prior wrist and hamstring issues and played five games in the playoffs, has been a key factor in the Thunder’s recent success. Teammate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander expressed sympathy, stating, "I don't even know. I just feel bad for him. ... It's obviously gonna be tough without a player like that. But he's not gone forever, he'll be back better than ever and we know it. We've just gotta hold the fort down until he comes back."
Presti also confirmed that guard Cason Wallace suffered a left labral tear in his shoulder and will require surgery, with his recovery timeline similarly pending. He added, "I like to say, and we say within our walls all the time, there's a difference between being positive and being optimistic. Not going to sit up here and say this is exactly where we want to be or this is how we'd like to have it, but at the same time, we're extremely optimistic about the recovery for both players. Most importantly, things could've been a lot worse."
The injuries come as the Thunder prepare for the upcoming season, having reached the Western Conference Finals last year despite Williams' earlier health concerns.
