Yale Report Uncovers Extensive Russian Re-Education and Militarization of Ukrainian Children

Summary

A Yale University report reveals over 210 facilities in Russia and occupied Ukraine where thousands of Ukrainian children undergo re-education and military training.

A recent report by Yale University's Humanitarian Research Lab has identified more than 210 facilities across Russia and Russian-occupied Ukraine where thousands of Ukrainian children, aged 8 to 17, are subjected to re-education and military training.

The study, titled "Ukraine's Stolen Children: Inside Russia's Network of Re-Education and Militarization," documents an extensive system aimed at erasing Ukrainian cultural identity and instilling pro-Russian narratives.

Nathaniel Raymond, the lab's director, stated that children are receiving training in grenade throwing and, in some instances, are involved in the manufacture of drones.

The report indicates that 62% of the identified sites focus on re-education, while 19% provide military training. Approximately half of these facilities are directly managed by Russian federal or local authorities.

Ukraine's government has verified that at least 19,500 children are missing since 2022, with estimates suggesting the number could be as high as 35,000.

In March 2023, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his commissioner for children's rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, for the alleged unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia, classifying it as a war crime. Russia has dismissed these charges, claiming the children were evacuated from conflict zones for their safety.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized that the return of these children must be a component of any peace agreement with Russia.
