Lions defeat Packers 20-17 as secondary rotation limits passing yards
Detroit improved to 4-2 after a 20-17 win over Green Bay, with quarterback Jared Goff throwing for 300 yards and a defensive rotation that allowed only 75 passing yards.
The Detroit Lions moved to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in the NFC North by beating the Green Bay Packers 20-17 in Week 7. Quarterback Jared Goff completed 68 passes for 300 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, while also taking responsibility for a fumble on a snap exchange. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs saw 61 offensive snaps and recorded 34 touches as the Lions kept him on the field for the close contest.
Wide receivers Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown logged 57 and 53 snaps respectively, contributing key catches in the win. Tight end Sam LaPorta was on the field for 66 snaps, primarily in blocking assignments, and caught a fourth-quarter pass that helped set up the game-winning field goal.
The offensive line featured all five starters for the full 68 snaps, with backup Larry Borom appearing in 12 snaps as a sixth lineman and occasional left tackle. Center Cade Mays played the entire game, though he was credited with the lone sack allowed and involvement in both Lions fumbles.
Defensively, the interior line rotation of Alim McNeill, Tyleik Williams and Skyler Gill-Howard limited the Packers to 75 passing yards. Edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson played 58 snaps, while DJ Wonnum saw increased action against Green Bay's pass-heavy approach.
Linebackers Jack Campbell and Derrick Barnes were on the field for every defensive snap, and rookie Trevor Nowaske contributed on the weak side. The secondary rotation of cornerbacks Roger McCreary, D.J. Reed, Khalil Dorsey and Rock Ya-Sin proved effective; Dorsey was targeted four times and allowed five receiving yards.
Safety Brian Branch returned to the lineup, recording an interception of Jordan Love and delivering several tackles. The Lions also relied on special teams players Jake Bates and Jack Fox in the closing moments of the game.
