President Donald Trump used a Michigan rally to vent about Norway and the Nobel committee after being passed over for the 2025 Peace Prize, while also airing nativist preferences about immigration.
U.S. President Donald Trump used a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, to attack Norway, claiming the country had treated him unfairly after the Nobel Peace Committee passed over him for the award. He framed the committee’s decision as a personal insult and, in a familiar display of grievance politics, said he had little interest in immigration from Norway.
Trump also pointed to the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, saying she had visited the White House and handed him her medal. > "And the person who got it, Maria, was very nice. She said, ‘I can’t believe I got it. This should go to President Trump,’ and she gave me her Nobel Peace Prize, that was so nice. It was very nice. I won’t forget that. It was very nice."
Norway’s foreign minister, Espen Barth Eide, responded by stressing the independence of the Nobel committee, saying the president had been reminded that the committee works free from political pressure.
The remarks came as part of a broader stream of comments from Trump on immigration, where he said he preferred migrants from Denmark over those from Somalia, Sweden or Norway.
