Lions edge Packers 20-17 as receivers shine and center struggles
Detroit defeated Green Bay 20-17, highlighted by strong performances from receivers Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown, while rookie center Cade Mays had a difficult debut.
Detroit secured a 20-17 win over the Green Bay Packers in a game that featured over 700 yards of combined offense. The Lions’ passing attack was propelled by wide receivers Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown, who combined for 244 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Williams caught five passes for 91 yards and two scores, while St. Brown recorded nine receptions for 153 yards, including a 40-yard gain.
The Lions’ defense improved with the return of safety Brian Branch, who intercepted a pass and contributed several tackles, while cornerback Khalil Dorsey made key pass breakups in limited defensive snaps. Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard was credited with limiting the Packers’ high-powered passing attack.
Center Cade Mays, a recent free-agent signing, struggled in his first start, allowing a sack and being involved in two fumbles that halted Detroit’s scoring opportunities. The Lions also saw limited involvement from tight end Sam LaPorta, who received only two targets.
Offensive coordinator Drew Petzing faced criticism after Detroit failed to convert on two fourth-down attempts, including a red-zone stop and a short-yardage run that was tackled for a loss. Quarterback Jared Goff threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns but avoided interceptions.
The victory gives Detroit momentum heading into a matchup with the Minnesota Vikings, while the performance of key players will be closely watched as the team seeks to build on the win.
