A24 Documentary Leads Box Office While DC's 'Clayface' Takes Top Spot

Summary

A24's Elizabeth Holmes documentary "You Can See Everything" earned $19.5 million in its opening weekend, while DC Studios' "Clayface" topped the weekend box office with a $24 million debut.

A24's documentary "You Can See Everything," about Elizabeth Holmes, expanded to 2,655 theaters and earned $19.5 million in its first weekend of wide release, bringing its two-week total to $45.1 million and placing it among the highest-grossing documentaries ever.

"A24 invested a reported $7 million in an interesting but complicated idea without a beginning, middle or end, that's turned into a zeitgeist film about money, dreams, truth and reality," said David A. Gross, publisher of the box-office newsletter FranchiseRe.

DC Studios' "Clayface" opened in 3,458 theaters and generated $24 million domestically, narrowly surpassing the documentary for the top weekend position. The R-rated body-horror film, produced on a $44 million budget, also added $19 million from international markets, helping DC Studios recover after the underperformance of "Supergirl."

"Clayface is a great example of studios taking chances, with DC venturing into R-rated horror and body horror, something that's certainly not your typical comic book movie," said Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Rentrak.

Other releases included Paramount's video-game adaptation "Street Fighter," which earned $8.6 million in its second weekend, and Laika's stop-motion film "Wildwood," which opened with $11.8 million in 2,779 locations. The comedy-drama "Wicker," starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård, debuted with $5.8 million across 1,471 theaters.

Taika Waititi's "Klara and the Sun" earned $725,000 in its opening weekend, while Amazon MGM did not report earnings for Sacha Baron Cohen's mockumentary "Ali G: Who Iz I?"
