Director Explains Unexpected Full-Frontal Scene in Theranos Documentary

Summary

Co-director Lance Oppenheim discussed why Elizabeth Holmes' partner Billy Evans appeared nude in the new A24 documentary "You Can See Everything," noting the scene’s spontaneous origin and Evans' willingness.

"You Can See Everything" includes a full-frontal shower scene featuring Billy Evans, the partner of former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes. Co-director Lance Oppenheim said he does not know why Evans agreed to the nudity, describing the filming setup with multiple cameras in and around the bathroom.

"I honestly don’t know," Oppenheim told GQ. "I’ve heard interesting theories that people have when they see it," he added, before outlining the technical details of the shoot.

"We were in the car ride on the way back from the gym, and I said to Billy, ‘We will give you some time to shower.’ And Billy responded, ‘Want to film me showering?’ I offered to film him in a way that could avoid seeing his genitals, but Billy said he didn’t care about being seen naked," Oppenheim recalled.

Evans, who appeared on the "All-In" podcast before the film’s release, said he had not yet seen the documentary and suggested it might be a regrettable decision, describing Holmes as appearing "insane" in the trailer.

The documentary, in development for more than three years by Oppenheim and Nathan Fielder, examines Holmes a month before she began an 11-year prison sentence for defrauding investors. It is slated for theatrical release on Oct. 16 and is being positioned for multiple categories at the 99th Academy Awards, including best documentary feature.
