Tyler Robinson Charged with Aggravated Murder in Charlie Kirk Shooting; Death Penalty Sought
Tyler Robinson has been charged with aggravated murder in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty.
Prosecutors have charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with aggravated murder in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on September 10. Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray announced that his office will seek the death penalty in this case.
In addition to the aggravated murder charge, Robinson faces multiple counts, including obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and felony discharge of a firearm. The charges allege that Robinson targeted Kirk due to his political views.
According to charging documents, Robinson's mother informed authorities that her son had become more politically active over the past year, leaning more toward pro-gay and transgender rights. She also noted that Robinson had started dating his roommate, who was transitioning to female.
Investigators recovered a bolt-action rifle wrapped in a towel near the university campus, believed to be the murder weapon. Forensic analysis found DNA consistent with Robinson's on the rifle, ammunition, and towel.
Robinson is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear virtually for his first court hearing at 5 p.m. ET.
