Manchester United drops captain Bruno Fernandes for Bournemouth match
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has omitted captain Bruno Fernandes from the squad for the upcoming Premier League game against Bournemouth after the midfielder criticised the team's tactics.
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick announced that captain Bruno Fernandes will not be included in the squad for Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth at Old Trafford. The decision follows Fernandes’ public comments after United’s 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League, where he suggested the team should be more aggressive in pressing.
"Picking the team is always a difficult decision," Carrick told Sky Sports. "We've got to make what we feel is the right one for the team to try to get the performance we want."
Carrick said the choice was based on football considerations, adding that he would continue to act in the club’s best interests. He did not rule out possible disciplinary action for Fernandes, though he indicated that the captaincy itself would not be revoked.
Fernandes, speaking to TNT Sports after the Como defeat, said the responsibility for tactical decisions rested with the manager and staff. He argued that United sometimes gave opponents too much possession, allowing them to gain confidence and increase the physical demands on United’s players.
The benching comes amid broader criticism from United players, including defender Lisandro Martínez, who questioned the club’s recruitment strategy. Former player Gary Neville described the internal atmosphere as “toxic” and suggested that recent public comments from senior players could undermine the squad’s cohesion.
United’s upcoming match against Bournemouth is viewed as a pivotal moment for Carrick, who has faced scrutiny over the team’s early-season performances.
