President Donald Trump reportedly expressed displeasure to aides about Donald Trump Jr.'s acceptance of a Russian oligarch's financial contribution to his Bahamas wedding, contradicting his earlier public defense.
President Donald Trump is said to have voiced strong criticism to close aides after learning that a substantial portion of his son Donald Trump Jr.'s Bahamas wedding was financed by Russian businessman Umar Kremlev, who has ties to President Vladimir Putin. The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump questioned his son's judgment over the arrangement, which became public in September when Kremlev's involvement was disclosed.
Donald Trump Jr. and Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson married in May, with Kremlev contributing hundreds of thousands of dollars to the three-day celebration. Although Kremlev did not attend the ceremony, he was among roughly 50 guests at the event. In September, President Trump told reporters that his son had already reimbursed Kremlev, a claim later confirmed by Kremlev in October.
"Frankly speaking, I do not understand why he decided to do so," Kremlev said, adding that the reimbursement was unnecessary and likening the gift to a casual invitation to his country house.
Bettina Trump described the contribution as an "extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend" and expressed gratitude. The Trump family members present at the festivities included Eric Trump and his wife Lara, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, and Tiffany Trump and Michael Boulos. President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and their son Barron did not attend.
President Trump explained his absence on Truth Social, stating that "circumstances pertaining to Government, and my love for the United States of America, do not allow me to do so." He later announced travel to New York City to attend an NBA Finals game.
Earlier, Trump had downplayed the controversy, calling it "not a big deal" and claiming he had never heard of Kremlev while defending his son’s acceptance of the gift. The newly reported private complaints suggest a more critical stance than his public statements indicated.
