NFLPA Says No Formal Investigation Yet Into Jalen Hurts' Medical Care
The NFL Players Association has not launched a formal investigation into the medical treatment of quarterback Jalen Hurts, though it emphasizes the need for a thorough review and notes the possibility of litigation against the doctors involved.
The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) said on Tuesday that it is not aware of any league investigation into the medical care provided to quarterback Jalen Hurts and that the NFL had indicated it did not plan to review the care he received. The union added that a comprehensive investigation is required before conclusions can be drawn, stressing the importance of determining the facts to ensure player safety.
Under Article 39, Section 5(f) of the collective bargaining agreement, the NFLPA has the authority to activate an investigation, but the statement released by the union does not constitute an official launch of such a process. No formal inquiry has begun at this time.
The union noted that, regardless of an internal investigation, Hurts could pursue legal action against the physicians who treated him. The collective bargaining agreement limits a player's ability to sue the team or league, but doctors remain subject to litigation. Past cases cited include a $43.5 million malpractice verdict for former Eagles safety Chris Maragos and a lawsuit filed by former Browns receiver David Bell against doctors involved in his injury treatment.
Hurts suffered a blood clot in his leg during a Week 4 game, which later developed into deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary emboli. The NFLPA indicated that a full review should examine the entire timeline from the initial injury to the diagnosis of the clotting complications.
Legal experts suggest that any potential lawsuit could involve courts in both the United States and the United Kingdom, depending on where the medical services were provided. The outcome of any legal action could affect Hurts' future career and compensation.
"We undertook a year-long investigation into this matter in which a number of truly world-leading surgeons and radiologists examined the matter, with many of them doing so on a no-fee basis," said Brad Sohn, lead attorney for David Bell, in a press release.
The situation remains unresolved, and the NFLPA emphasized that further investigative steps, whether through the union or the courts, are necessary to address unanswered questions about the care Hurts received.
