New court documents naming Rep. Ilhan Omar as "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi" have intensified scrutiny of her immigration history, prompting President Trump to call for her resignation.
Federal court filings released this week identify Rep. Ilhan Omar by the name "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi," reviving questions about her immigration background and a prior marriage that has been the subject of a federal investigation. The documents are part of a probe into alleged immigration fraud, though no charges have been filed and Omar has denied any wrongdoing.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro told Fox News that the filings raise the question of whether Omar complied with naturalization and immigration laws. "The question is, who is Ilhan Omar and has she followed all of the laws as it relates to naturalization and immigration," Pirro said.
President Donald Trump, speaking at a campaign rally in Iowa, said Omar used a false identity to be sworn in and urged her to resign from Congress. "She used a fake name to be sworn in. I assume she must immediately have to resign from Congress," Trump said.
During an appearance on MSNBC's "MS NOW," Omar was asked about her former husband, whom she said she was not related to "to my knowledge." Trump criticized the response as one of the worst he had heard.
The filings also coincide with a Justice Department request to keep records related to a search of Omar's Washington, D.C., home sealed, prompting speculation about the status of that investigation. In addition, federal reviewers are examining Omar's financial disclosures, which previously listed businesses linked to her husband at values up to $30 million. Omar attributed the figures to an accounting error and denied any financial misconduct.
Omar has described the investigations as politically motivated and has accused the Trump administration of targeting her. The appearance of an alternate name in the court documents does not, by itself, establish immigration fraud, and no criminal charges have been announced.
