Michael Wolff claims that President Donald Trump’s outreach to Russian President Vladimir Putin is driven by aspirations for personal financial gain, citing unnamed White House sources.
Biographer Michael Wolff told listeners of the Inside Trump’s Head podcast that President Donald Trump’s recent overtures toward Russian President Vladimir Putin may be motivated by the former president’s desire to amass personal wealth. Wolff said an unnamed White House insider close to Trump believes the president aims to increase his fortune by $20 billion before leaving office, with additional deals that could generate $100 billion after his term ends.
According to Wolff, the insider suggested Trump views the presidency as a stepping stone toward becoming an “oligarch,” and that Putin represents a world leader with access to substantial financial resources and limited regulation. Wolff added that this financial motive could explain the president’s strained relationship with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he described as “frustrating” Trump’s efforts to negotiate with Russia.
The podcast also referenced a recent agreement in which President Trump lifted congressionally approved sanctions on Russian oil companies after allowing diesel exports to the United States. Additionally, Ukrainian forces reportedly experienced reduced access to a military-grade version of Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network, a development that several administration insiders told the Wall Street Journal involved Trump’s knowledge, though the president has denied the claim.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Trump’s communications director, Steven Cheung, previously dismissed Wolff’s reporting as inaccurate.
"Who among us thought that we would see an American president side with the aggressor, side with Russia?" said podcast co-host Joanna Coles.
"What Trump wants... perhaps more than anything, is money. I think Trump in his heart, in his head, wants to be an oligarch," Wolff added.
