Sedgwick County DA outlines ongoing review in Stryker Sports Complex crash

Summary

The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said the driver’s release was not final and that investigators are still reviewing evidence before deciding on charges in the October 17 crash that killed two and injured ten.

The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office issued a statement Thursday explaining the steps it is taking before filing criminal charges in the October 17 crash at Wichita’s Stryker Sports Complex, which resulted in two deaths and ten injuries.

The office said the Wichita Police Department continues to lead the investigation, with prosecutors consulting detectives daily since the incident. Early investigators, in coordination with the DA’s office, concluded that the information available at the time did not meet the probable-cause standard required to keep the driver in custody, but the decision was not final and the investigation remains open.

Prosecutors indicated they must still examine police reports, witness statements, crash-reconstruction analyses, video footage, forensic test results and other evidence before reaching a charging decision. The office noted that fatal-crash cases often take weeks to process because much of the evidence requires laboratory testing and expert review, citing an average of 79.3 days for similar investigations in 2025 and 2026.

"Every agency involved in this matter is devoting its full attention to this case," the DA’s office said. "We have no expectation this case will require weeks to resolve, but there is nothing unusual about the time being taken to carefully assess this case. Vehicle deaths are complicated investigations that take time. We will not set an artificial deadline that compromises a careful and responsible review. Our community deserves answers, and it deserves a decision that is careful, fair, and above all correct."

The office pledged to issue an update when a charging decision is made or when additional information can be responsibly released, and asked the public to refrain from speculation, directing further questions to the Wichita Police Department.
