Utah Man Arrested in Connection with Charlie Kirk Assassination
Tyler Robinson, 22, has been arrested and is expected to face charges in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.
Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old from Washington, Utah, has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Robinson is being held without bail on suspicion of aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury. Formal charges are anticipated to be filed by 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday, with a virtual court appearance scheduled for 5 p.m. the same day.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray stated that under Utah law, aggravated murder carries penalties ranging from 25 years to life imprisonment, life without parole, or the death penalty. Obstruction of justice and felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury carry penalties of one to 15 years and five years to life in prison, respectively.
Robinson's father recognized him from photos released by authorities and encouraged him to surrender. Initially resistant, Robinson eventually agreed, leading to his arrest late Thursday night. Authorities have not disclosed a motive but noted that Robinson had expressed opposition to Kirk's viewpoints and had become more politically active in recent years.
Investigators recovered a high-powered, bolt-action rifle believed to have been used in the attack, along with bullet casings engraved with messages. One casing read, "Hey, fascist! Catch!" and another featured lyrics from an Italian anti-fascist song. Additionally, messages from a chat app referenced a rifle wrapped in a towel and engraved bullets.
Kirk was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University, an event that was captured on video and widely circulated online. The attack has raised concerns about political violence in the United States. President Donald Trump announced plans to posthumously award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, describing him as "a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty, and an inspiration to millions."
Utah Governor Spencer Cox emphasized the importance of unity in the wake of the tragedy, urging Americans to use this moment as an opportunity to turn away from political violence and division. "This is our moment: Do we escalate or do we find an off-ramp?" Cox said. "It's a choice."
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities continuing to gather and review evidence. Further details are expected to emerge as the case progresses.
