Apple to unveil redesigned MacBook Pro with lighter chassis, OLED screen and touch support

Summary

Apple is set to launch its first MacBook Pro redesign in five years, featuring a lighter body, OLED display, touchscreen capability and a notch-free screen.

Apple is scheduled to reveal a redesigned MacBook Pro next week, the first major overhaul of the line in five years. The new model is expected to retain the M5 Pro and M5 Max processors while offering several hardware improvements.

According to analyst Mark Gurman, the updated laptops will be "significantly lighter" after Apple reengineered internal components and rearranged parts to reduce weight. The chassis will also be slightly thinner, though the port selection is not expected to change dramatically.

The display will shift from the current Liquid Retina XDR panel to an OLED screen, a technology previously used on iPhones and the iPad Pro. Apple describes its 2024 iPad Pro OLED as "the world’s most advanced display," and the same technology is slated for the new MacBook Pro.

The OLED panel will include full touchscreen functionality, with macOS Golden Gate optimized for touch input. Apple positions touch as a secondary option alongside the traditional trackpad and keyboard.

The redesign will also eliminate the notch introduced in the 2021 model, replacing it with a hole-punch camera cutout. A Dynamic Island feature is anticipated, potentially available to older Macs via software updates.

"The new MacBook Pros are lighter — significantly lighter," Gurman said.

The changes aim to improve portability, visual quality and user interaction for the upcoming MacBook Pro lineup.
