Subtropical Storm Josephine moves up East Coast toward Cape Cod

Summary

Subtropical Storm Josephine, with sustained winds of 65 mph, is tracking north-northeast along the Atlantic seaboard and is expected to bring gusty winds and brief coastal flooding before moving offshore.

Subtropical Storm Josephine formed in the Atlantic on Wednesday after evolving from the system previously designated Invest 93L. The storm is currently situated about 265 miles south of Nantucket and is producing maximum sustained winds of 65 mph.

The forecast calls for Josephine to move north-northeast before turning northeast and accelerating away from the East Coast by Friday, with a brief chance of affecting Atlantic Canada as it moves offshore. Gusty winds are expected to spread across parts of the Northeast beginning Wednesday evening and continuing into Thursday.

"Long Island and eastern Massachusetts could see wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph, while Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard could experience gusts exceeding 50 mph on Thursday," the FOX Forecast Center said.

Showers are possible across Cape Cod and Rhode Island, though rainfall totals are projected to remain low. The storm is also expected to cause coastal flooding in parts of the East Coast, with moderate flooding potentially persisting in sections of the Chesapeake Bay into Thursday or early Friday. Wind and rain are forecast to subside by the weekend.
