Bend teacher recounts actions after school shooting

Summary

Teacher Becky Drury described how she responded during the Oct. 15 shooting at Silver Rail Elementary, stating she was shot before she could act and later pretended to be dead.

Teacher Becky Drury released a statement describing her experience during the Oct. 15 shooting at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon. She said she heard activity outside, ran to investigate, saw the shooter, and quickly returned to her classroom. Drury attempted to close the door, but the shooter entered and shot her at close range, causing severe injuries to both arms. She said she then lay on the floor and pretended to be dead to avoid further gunfire.

"I want to make sure the events of that day and my actions in particular are reported accurately," Drury wrote.

Drury added that she was shot before she could intervene and expressed gratitude for community support while requesting privacy during her recovery. She also urged media outlets to rely on trusted local voices for accurate reporting.

The incident, which occurred in a special-needs classroom, left teacher Megan Lambert dead along with three students, ages five, eight and eleven. A seventh-grade student was also injured and received emergency care at Oregon Health & Science University. Police have not disclosed a motive for the attack.

Drury’s husband, Will Drury, said she required surgery on her left arm and right hand. Earlier police statements had indicated Drury had shielded a student during the shooting, a claim Drury’s account does not confirm.
