Glee set for reboot on streaming platforms after decade-long hiatus

Summary

The musical comedy-drama series, which aired from 2009 to 2015, is slated to return on Hulu and Disney+, with original cast members expressing cautious optimism.

The popular musical comedy-drama series created by Ryan Murphy is preparing for a revival on Hulu and Disney+ more than ten years after its original run ended in 2015. The show, which followed a high school choir in Ohio and tackled themes such as sexuality, race, disability and mental health, originally aired on Fox for six seasons.

Former cast member Max George, now a singer with the band The Wanted, said the prospect of a new season feels "nice" after a long break and praised Murphy’s past work. > "I think it was probably coming towards the end in terms of the storylines and everything, but 10 years has gone by, and Ryan Murphy will probably come up with something genius. So I'm expecting big things," he told BBC Scotland.

George added that he has been in contact with about ten original cast members, who have shown enthusiasm for the idea, though no scripts have been released yet. He also mentioned he plans to write a few scripts to gauge reactions from the former cast.

Lea Michele, who played Rachel Berry, indicated she would welcome a return, stating she will "always love Glee" and will follow Murphy’s projects. Chris Colfer, who portrayed Kurt Hummel, noted that a reboot would be challenging following the death of co-star Naya Rivera, but acknowledged fan interest in a continuation.

The announcement follows the series’ earlier successes, including a 2010 concert tour captured on film and a record for Billboard Hot 100 appearances that surpassed The Beatles for a non-solo act.
