Two suspects rearrested in UK on suspicion of aiding Iran over RAF Fairford plot

Summary

British police rearrested a British and a dual UK-Iranian national on suspicion of assisting Iran's intelligence service in a suspected terror plot targeting the U.S.-run RAF Fairford base.

British police announced on Tuesday that they have rearrested two men – a 24-year-old British citizen and a 25-year-old dual UK-Iranian national – on suspicion of assisting Iran's intelligence service in a plot against the U.S.-operated RAF Fairford air base in western England. The arrests were made under the National Security Act after the suspects had previously been released on bail pending further investigation.

The suspected plot, uncovered after a September 27 incident that prompted the evacuation of local residents and the deployment of armed police and bomb-disposal units, involved the discovery of gasoline in three vans near the base, though no explosives were found. British authorities have linked the incident to Tehran, leading the United States to suspend bomber operations from RAF Fairford.

Laurence Taylor, head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, said detectives are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry in what he described as a complex investigation. > "We consider it highly likely that there is Iranian state involvement," Taylor said in a statement, adding that investigators are examining the extent and ambition of that involvement.

Five other men previously arrested in connection with the case remain on bail, and no charges have yet been filed. The Iranian Embassy in London responded to the allegations, stating that the regime "categorically rejects and strongly condemns the recent speculations" linking Iran to the incident.
