Woman questioned by police after Kansas youth soccer field crash kills two

Summary

A 34-year-year-old driver who struck spectators at a Wichita soccer game was detained for several hours, gave a recorded statement and was released pending toxicology and vehicle investigations.

A 34-year-old woman drove her pickup truck onto a youth soccer field at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita on Saturday, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and injuring ten others, including five children. Police detained the driver and interviewed her for several hours, during which she provided a recorded statement, according to a Wichita Police Department spokesperson.

"The female motorist was detained and interviewed by investigators for several hours after she allegedly drove into a group of people during a Saturday afternoon game. She was cooperative and gave a recorded statement before she was released," said Andrew Ford.

Investigators have not yet filed charges while they await the results of toxicology tests and a mechanical examination of the truck. The department said it is examining all possible factors, such as speed, vehicle malfunction and potential impairment by drugs or alcohol. The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office plans to conduct an initial review of the case later this week.

The victims identified by police include 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer. The injured group comprises five children aged five to nine and five adults ranging from 28 to 68 years old, all with non-life-threatening injuries.
