Guardians eliminated by Rays in ALCS, ending season with division title
Cleveland was knocked out of the American League Championship Series by Tampa Bay, concluding a season that saw the team win its division but fall short of a World Series berth.
Cleveland's postseason run ended on Monday night as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Guardians in the American League Championship Series, eliminating the team from World Series contention. The Rays outperformed Cleveland in power hitting, small-ball tactics and bullpen depth, advancing to the series finale.
The Guardians finished the regular season with a record that placed them atop their division, marking their first division crown since 2016. Pitcher Freddy Peralta logged more than six innings of effective relief for Tampa Bay, while the Rays' offense highlighted a two-run home run by Junior Caminero and a decisive changeup from Yandy Diaz.
Cleveland's offense managed three runs, including a sixth-inning single and a seventh-inning bases-loaded walk, but could not overcome the Rays' lead. The team relied on a mix of starters and relievers, using eight pitchers over eight innings.
General manager Chris Antonetti said the organization remains focused on winning a World Series, noting that the club will continue to pursue opportunities to improve its roster. "The goal is to win a World Series," Antonetti said after the loss.
The series highlighted the financial constraints of several playoff teams, with the Rays, Guardians and Brewers among the lowest-paying clubs in the league, according to Spotrac data.
