Additional survivors identified after Bend elementary school shooting

Résumé

School officials said two other children and a staff member were unharmed in the Silver Rail Elementary shooting, while investigations continue.

A spokesperson for the Bend-La Pine School District confirmed that, in addition to the victims, two other children and a special-education staff member were present in the special-needs classroom at Silver Rail Elementary when a 16-year-old opened fire on Thursday. The district representative, Scott Maben, said the additional students were "physically unharmed by the assailant" but did not have details on any injuries they might have sustained while escaping or hiding.

The attack claimed the lives of five students and four teachers, including 25-year-old learning specialist Megan Lambert. Police reported that a teacher attempted to wrestle the gun from the shooter and a parent who pursued the teen ultimately shot the assailon dead, ending the incident after a few minutes.

The shooter, who had been enrolled in Bend-La Pine schools until November 2025, was a former special-needs student at Silver Rail and had attended three other district schools and a district-run support program, Maben said.

School buildings across the district remained closed on Monday and Tuesday while authorities continued to investigate the motive. Silver Rail itself stayed closed, with district officials saying decisions about reopening will be made after consulting staff and parents.

"She still has a long road ahead," said Will Drury, whose wife Becky Drury, a special-education staff member injured in the shooting, was treated at St. Charles Bend. "She's an amazing woman who continues to show courage and resolve through all this."

Local parents used social media to organize childcare for colleagues returning to work, reflecting community efforts to support one another after the tragedy.
