Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon defends DOJ's noncitizen voting investigation on CBS

Résumé

Harmeet Dhillon told CBS's "60 Minutes" that the Justice Department is pursuing noncitizen voting cases as part of a broader enforcement effort, noting the investigation has been ongoing for over a year.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon appeared on CBS's "60 Minutes" to discuss the Justice Department's investigation into noncitizen voting ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. When host Lesley Stahl asked whether the probe was intended to sow distrust in the election system, Dhillon said the opposite was true, noting that distrust already exists and that the department is now prosecuting a larger number of cases than in previous administrations. She pointed to the Biden administration’s prosecution of 13 noncitizen voting cases as a baseline and emphasized that the Justice Department has been conducting investigations for more than a year, with "thousands" of leads under review.

Dhillon reiterated a policy announced in July to pursue every provable case of illegal voting, describing the approach as a "broken windows" strategy that differs from earlier practices that focused only on large-scale fraud. She said there are "no plans" to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to polling locations and dismissed speculation about a nationwide challenge to the midterm results, stating that any challenge would likely affect only individual votes, not the overall election outcome. A Justice Department spokesperson added that the agency is bringing more than double the number of election-fraud cases each week compared with 2020, arguing that enforcing the law on illegal ballots protects election integrity.
