Rams struggle continues as special teams errors and defensive lapses cost win against Cardinals

Summary

The Los Angeles Rams fell 18–16 to the Arizona Cardinals, highlighting problems on special teams, defense and inconsistent offense, while the Chargers and Vikings face their own challenges.

The Los Angeles Rams lost 18–16 to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, exposing ongoing issues with special teams, a porous defense and an offense that has been inconsistent this season. Quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns, but the Rams were unable to overcome a late 43-yard field goal by the Cardinals that secured the win.

Special teams missteps were evident when punter Ethan Evans handled an extra-point attempt that should have been routine, but the play turned into a turnover and gave Arizona a chance to score. The loss dropped the Rams to 2-4 and left them trailing the 5-0 San Francisco 49ers in the NFC West.

The Chargers also remain winless, with coach Jim Harbaugh under scrutiny after quarterback Justin Herbert posted a 22-6 loss in Kansas City and has struggled to perform at his previous level. Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel and general manager Joe Hortiz have faced criticism for not improving the roster.

In New York, Giants rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy delivered a solid performance against the New Orleans Saints, completing 11 of 21 passes for 243 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The Giants will evaluate whether McCarthy can earn the starting role over Jaxson Dart in the upcoming game against Houston.

Meanwhile, the Houston Texans saw a strong debut from rookie wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., who caught three passes for 34 yards, all resulting in first downs, in a 34-31 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. The performance highlighted the developing chemistry between Harrison and quarterback C.J. Stroud, who spread the ball to ten different receivers in the win.

"We need to fix the fundamentals on special teams and tighten up our defense," said Rams coach Sean McVay after the game.

"Our goal is to get back on track and compete for a playoff spot," added Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh in a post-game interview.

The upcoming weeks will test whether the Rams can reverse their fortunes, if the Chargers can revive Herbert’s play, and how the Giants and Texans will build on their recent performances.
