Vice President JD Vance Hosts 'The Charlie Kirk Show' in Tribute to Slain Activist

Summary

Vice President JD Vance hosted 'The Charlie Kirk Show' to honor his late friend and conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated during a Utah event.

Vice President JD Vance hosted 'The Charlie Kirk Show' on Monday, paying tribute to his late friend and conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last week during an event at Utah Valley University. Vance announced his participation on Sunday via X, stating he had the "honor of hosting the Charlie Kirk Show" to "pay tribute to my friend." Speaking from his office in the White House complex, Vance acknowledged the challenge of filling in for Kirk, saying, "But I'm going to try to do my best."

Kirk, 31, was shot and killed during a Utah Valley University event hosted by his organization, Turning Point USA, in Orem, Utah. He was closely associated with Vance, President Trump, and the Trump family. Following Kirk's death, his body was transported to his home state of Arizona aboard Air Force Two. Vance canceled a planned trip to New York to accompany Kirk's remains, expressing that he was honored to "take Charlie's remains from Utah to Arizona."

Vance has described his longstanding friendship with Kirk, noting that Kirk was a key ally in his political rise. After Kirk's death, Vance shared on X that Kirk was one of the first people he consulted when considering a Senate run in 2021 and that Kirk advocated for him to become the vice-presidential nominee "both in public and private." Vance referred to Kirk as a "true friend" and "the smartest political operative I ever met," adding, "I owe so much to Charlie."

Kirk's efforts in mobilizing young voters have been credited with aiding President Trump's 2024 election bid. Vance highlighted that much of the administration's success "traces directly to Charlie's ability to organize and convene," emphasizing that Kirk "didn't just help us win in 2024, he helped us staff the entire government."

Andrew Kolvet, the executive producer of 'The Charlie Kirk Show,' mentioned on CNN that Vance's hosting "came about because he asked if he could do it," noting the genuine friendship between Vance and Kirk. Kolvet added that many individuals in the federal government were personal friends of Kirk and had known each other for years.

During the show, Vance emphasized the importance of bringing Kirk's killer to justice and discussed concerns about "the incredibly destructive movement of left-wing extremism that has grown up over the last few years," suggesting it was a factor in Kirk's assassination. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller echoed this sentiment, stating, "We are going to channel all of the anger that we have over the organized campaign that led to this assassination, to uproot and dismantle these terrorist networks."

President Trump announced that Kirk would be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. A memorial service for Kirk is scheduled for September 21 in Arizona. Kirk's widow, Erika Kirk, expressed that "the movement my husband built will not die," affirming that "the radio and podcast show that he was so proud of will go on."
